NBA Playbook – A Look At The Playcalling In The NBA Through Videos, Pictures, & Words » The Lakers Late Without Kobe

The Lakers Late Without Kobe

The Lakers have now played 4 games without Kobe Bryant, and last night’s game was the first close one out of those 4.  The Warriors tied the game at 89 with 4:37 left.  The Lakers then went out on a 7 point run, effectively putting the Warriors out of reach.  After Ron Artest made a foul shot, the Lakers went inside to Pau Gasol.  In fact, he went on to score the next 6 points.  The Warriors really had no answer (they tried using Ronny Turiaf) to defend Gasol, so the Lakers went to him time and time again:

Lamar Odom pulls down a rebound and brings it up court.  This is a pretty common sight if you are a Lakers’ fan.  Odom is a terrific rebounder, but he also has the ball handling ability to bring the ball up the court as well.

What is different is when it gets to the halfcourt.  Instead of getting the ball into Kobe’s hands, Odom holds onto it and and Pau comes over to set the screen for him.  Now this isn’t a “true Pick & Roll,” it is just designed to try and get Gasol in a good post position.

As you can see, Odom doesn’t really try to penetrate off the pick, he just gives it a second, and gets the ball inside to Gasol.  Now look where he catches it.  Since the Warriors have nobody to bang with him inside he will be able to take his time and getting into scoring position.

Remember where he caught it?  Well, look where he is now.  Right in the block, and he pulls off a very nice spin move and finishes with the lay-in.

Now I am not saying that they don’t go into Gasol late when Kobe is in the game, they do, but it always seems to be a second or third option (and not that I blame Kobe, who is a great scorer).  Without Kobe in the game, it is obvious that the Lakers are actively looking to get the ball to Pau late, and against the Warriors (a team with no real big man), that makes sense.

  • yes i was in a fantasy league with John C and he is a jerk. anyway...... Why is kobe having to bail the lakers out so much this year. with the addition of artest they became more physical and i think more dynamic but it seems like Kobe has been shooting the ball more than last year. i personally like the fact that the lakers have sat Kobe. 1 he gets to rest and heal...2 it gives the bench and some key players involved and might help them find some stability in their play. i think Kobe is clutch but he shouldn't have to hit a game winner every night and it seems like that is happening a lot this year.

Pruiti, i hate to tell you this partner...but i believe John C. was just messing with you :) that post had a "sarcastic" shade to it, just thought i'd let you know.

It could be semperfi, but hey, I will take any compliment I can get, lol...
  • great stuff man. I am a grad student myself... and I think we have the same eye for the game. I think single plays can be used as anecdotes to make larger points. check me out if you get a chance.

I second John C. Even more effective than the position analysis is the visual evidence. Others might write about it, but the visualization employed on this blog really makes it easy to recognize in other situations. There's a big difference between explaining what just happened and educating your readers to notice when it happens in other situations. The visual guides here really make that happen.

Keep it up. Quite frankly, even one a day is a precious gift.

Imagine how rarely it would be updated if the Nets were GOOD! :)

just saw the blog, great stuff man.

Hey Pruiti, just want to let you know your blog is absolutely fantastic. Your analysis is always in depth and truly mind-boggling. Even with this article about giving the ball to Pau Gasol (I think 90% of NBA fans will recognize the mismatch), your subtle analysis of Pau's position before and after his post-work is something I would generally take for granted. Keep up the AMAZING work. The only complaint I have is that there's not enough updates to feed my appetite. But then again, if you were constantly analyzing you'd probably become hired as a scout!

Thanks for the kind words John, it means a lot. I wish I could post more too but with running NetsAreScorching and grad school, I am basically limited to 1 post a day. I try to do more when I can (yesterday I got 2 up). Thanks again for the kind words though.
