Andrew Bogut Does The Little Things In A Bucks Win

When the Bucks and the Grizzlies went into overtime, it was apparent that one player needed to step up if they wanted to get their team a win.  That player ended up being Andrew Bogut, and it didn’t come from scoring the basketball.

With the Bucks up by 1, the Grizzlies set up and ran a very nice play.  Mike Conley brought the basketball down and came off of a Marc Gasol screen.  As this was happening Rudy Gay, who started in the corner, comes back to the middle of the floor to receive a dribble hand-off from Conley.

After the receiving the dribble hand-off, Conley comes off a screen set by Marc Gasol.  Like I said earlier, this is a really nice misdirection play, but it is just so well defended by the Bucks.

Knowing that Gay’s defender was going to stick to his hip around the screen, thus making a jump shot tough to complete (if Gay pulls up for a jumper with his defender still on his hip, it would get blocked from behind), Bogut defends the lane ready to cut off any dribble-drive attempt from Gay.

Bogut reads Gay’s move and gets his feet set.  Gay lowers his shoulder and Bogut absorbs the contact and draws the offensive foul, preserving the Bucks’ lead.  Here it is in real time:

After an eventual basket by the Grizzlies, the Bucks come out of a timeout needing a score.

Brandon Jennings brings the ball up with John Salmons setting a screen for him.  The goal of this screen isn’t to free up Jennings, but it is set to get Salmons the ball on the middle of the floor.

After setting the screen, Salmons pops out instead of rolling to the basket and he receives the ball.

After facing up, Salmons uses a screen set by Andrew Bogut.  This is a fantastic screen set by Bogut, he bodied Salmons’ defender (Rudy Gay) up, and stopped him in his tracks.  Because of the screen, Gay was unable to get over the screen and stick to Salmons’ hip.

Gasol defends the screen the same way Bogut did (played off waiting for dribble penetration), however there wasn’t a defender over the top, and it allowed John Salmons to pull up for the easy jumper.  This basket gave the Bucks the lead, and they would hold it for the remainder of the game.  Here is the play in real time, watch Bogut’s screen closely.

    drbearclaw :
Bogut was moving his feet A LOT when he took that charge…

You do realize that there is nothing in the rules that requires a defender to plant their feet for a charge, and that the rules do explicitly allow a defender to move slightly to protect themselves? By the rules Bogut just needs to "establish position" far enough from Gay to allow him to stop or change direction. When Gay chose to drop his shoulder instead of going left it became a charge.

Great screen by Bogut...awful job of getting through the pick by Gay.

I don't know what it looked like from the ref's baseline view, but from the press box live version, Bogut was moving his feet A LOT when he took that charge...
