An Unfortunate Break Hurts The Jazz

After falling behind big early against the Lakers, the Jazz fought back a number of times.  In the 4th quarter, the Jazz were able to cut the Lakers lead down to 10 with about six and a half minutes left, forcing the Lakers to take a timeout.  Coming out of that timeout the Lakers used a bit of luck to get themselves the dagger.

After running through an offense with a ton of cuts and off the ball movement, the Lakers try to enter the ball to Pau Gasol in the mid post.  However, C.J. Miles makes a great read and anticipates the pass, breaking on the basketball.

Miles gets his hand on the basketball and he knocks it loose.  Both Wes Matthews and Shannon Brown break down the court anticipating the Jazz recovering the loose ball.  Shannon Brown to get on defense and Wes Matthews headed down the court to try and get the break started.

However, a bad bounce causes the ball to land right into Lamar Odom’s hands.  Matthews recognizes this and sprints towards Odom.  This is the one mistake that the Jazz make this entire play, as Paul Millsap was already in the area.  Brown notices Matthews leaving and he spots up at the three point line.

As Odom passes it out, Deron Williams is put in a tough spot, and he has two decent three point shooters to defend.  As Brown makes the catch, Williams chooses to split the two shooters in case an extra pass is made.

That extra pass isn’t made and Shannon Brown knocks down the three that puts the Lakers up 13, making the game out of reach.  Here is the play in real time.
