Running On Rajon Rondo

We have talked about Rajon Rondo’s rebounding here in the past, and I think he is one of the better rebounding guards in the game.  However, there are times where Rondo crashes the offensive boards that I think teams could make him pay for hanging around the basket.  Teams don’t really try to take advantage of Rondo hanging around for an offensive rebound, mainly because they know he is quick enough to get back on defense.  However in game 5, something just looked off with Rondo.  I don’t know if it is fatigue or a nagging injury, but Rondo doesn’t look as quick has he has been in the first 4 games, and now you are starting to see Jameer Nelson run on him a bit.

Look at where Rondo is as the shot goes up.  Normally, most PGs at this spot on the court as the shot goes up sprints back to go on defense.  Not Rondo.  He floats towards the basket looking for a long rebound.  Here is the result:

Notice how instead of running back and then waiting for the opposing PG (which is something Rondo is normally quick enough to do), he reaches and goes for the steal in the backcourt. He fails to get it and causes confusion with the Celtics defense, freeing up Rashard Lewis for three.

It wasn’t just this possession either, the Magic were really successful pushing the ball up the court all night.  Maybe the day off will help Rondo get his legs back, but if he doesn’t, expect for the Magic to try and run on Rondo once again.

    Around the 6 second mark, the Cs are in good position to not get run on, with 2 guys back (as you pointed out earlier, that appears to be their system, where the PG doesn’t necessarily have primary responsibility for getting back); by 9 seconds, they’ve allowed the Magic to start a break. Some of that is Rondo, he looks tired.
    But Id put at least as much on Glenn Davis (at least, I think that’s who Im seeing in the video). The reason that Lewis is open is that, while Howard and Davis were at the same place at the 8 second mark, Howard beats him downcourt by about 20 feet. Another C has to pick Howard up at the rim, and then Davis runs past Lewis to make the switch onto Howard- but it’s too late.
    I think the Cs were really missing Perkins- Im pretty sure that that lumbering jog is Davis’s top speed…

    Thats not the only issue,the main issue is the Celtics can’t run for 48 minutes with the magic, if the magic keep up this tempo they will have a chance to even overcome defesits of up to 8 to 12 point in any QT even more so in the 4th.

    @Kamron
    I see your great point but in reality i dont think they can run a full court set with the magic for 4QTS the magic have to play an up temp game to stay alive, if they dont its over for them
