Quick Hitter – New Orleans Opens The Half In Style
So far, every Quick Hitter I have done has highlighted a play that leads to a made basket. That makes sense considering that usually when you run a great play, you are going to get two points out of it. However, there are situations where a team goes out and runs a terrific set only to miss the basket. That is what happened last night when the Hornets ran a great set to get David West a clean look at the rim to start the second half, only to have him miss the lay-up.

As Chris Paul brings the ball up, David West sets a down screen for Trevor Ariza who flashes to the top of the key. Paul gets to the wing and then makes a pass to Ariza.

After Ariza makes the catch, he squares up and gets into triple threat position as West settles in on the block. After a second, Ariza and Paul execute a dribble handoff.

Paul gets the ball handed to him and he immediately works off of an Emeka Okafor screen. As this is taking place, David West sets a backscreen for Ariza, and Ariza uses this screen to flash to the opposite block.

Instead of rolling after setting his screen, Okafor sets a pindown screen for David West, who flashes to the basketball right behind him.

Okafor’s job isn’t really to set a solid screen here, he just wants to get in the way of West’s defender enough to give him a clear lane to the basket. That is exactly what he does here, and West attacks the rim.

Unfortunately, he misses the lay-up at the rim but that shouldn’t take away from the great design of this play by Monty Williams coming out of halftime. Here is the play in real time:
