The Dallas Mavericks Prevent A Blake Griffin Highlight

It seems that almost every time the Clippers play that there is a Blake Griffin highlight.  Against the Mavericks, that moment almost came in the third quarter, but with a great heads-up play, DeShawn Stevenson was able to keep that highlight from happening:

We pick this up with Jason Kidd taking a three-point shot with 3 seconds left on the shot clock.  With only one Maverick under the basket, there is a good chance that the Clippers were going to grab this rebound.

Once Griffin sees that his teammate has secured the rebound, he takes off down the court, looking to get an advantage on his man, who is behind him.

As Griffin gets to halfcourt, he is able to create some distance between himself and his defender, Brendan Haywood.  At this point, Griffin has really picked up some speed, and it looks like a lob is inevitable.

However, instead of just backpedaling, DeShawn Stevenson turns around and sprints to catch up to Griffin.

With Stevenson trailing closely behind Griffin, there is no way that the lob pass can be made.  This forces Griffin to try and get open as the Clippers bring up the ball.

Griffin gets the ball along the baseline and the Clippers are able to triple team him.  Eventually, an traveling violation gets called after Griffin kicks the basketball out.  Here is the play in real time:

Great hustle here by Stevenson.  If he continues to backpedal, there is no doubt that a Blake Griffin alley-oop is coming.  With the game close, a Griffin lob would have sucked all of the energy out of the building.  This play by Stevenson was not only about preventing two points, but it also prevented the Clippers from gaining the momentum.

Small correction: It looks like the refs are calling a travel and not an offensive foul.

Small Correction: Quake Griffin can still jump higher than Stevenson and he never got between Blake and the basket. Bledsoe should have thrown it.

JKidd was already back as well, so it was more like DeShawn + Kidd stopped the lob.
