Using A Back-Up Big To Protect The Rim

The issue of protecting the rim with under one second left has been discussed at length here, and one of the reasons why coaches seem not to play zone/protect the rim is because they want a big covering the inbounds pass.  With the Dallas Mavericks down one point with 0.3 seconds left, it was obvious that they were going to try and run a lob (something that the Mavericks did this preseason).  Wanting a big to defend the inbounds pass, but wanting to protect the rim, Lionel Hollins put out a lineup with two centers, allowing him to achieve both of his goals:

Here, coach Hollins used Marc Gasol to defend the inbounds pass coming from Jason Kidd and Hamed Haddadi to protect the paint.  So when Dirk Nowitzki sets a screen for Shawn Marion, trying to set up the lob, Haddadi doesn’t bite on it and stays in the lane, protecting the rim.  Kidd can’t make the pass to Marion flashing to the rim, so he is forced to get it to Jason Terry for the 40 footer.

Coach Hollins came up with an interesting way to defend against the lob here, and you may see other coaches start to copy this in these situations.  This is because we know that coaches want a big on the inbounds pass (we have seen coaches go man or not have a big protecting the rim to put a big on the inbounds pass), but they also need to protect the rim in these situations since the lob is the only play that can beat you.  Throwing the back-up center in the game just to be big and stand in the lane is a very smart move.
