Round 1 Preview: Orlando vs. Atlanta – Key Sets

Orlando Magic – Post Timeout Sets

The Stats:

0.940 PPP | 2nd best | 45% Shooting

Clipboard Award Final Standing: 24th

The Plays:

Coming out of timeouts, the Orlando Magic like to run a set with both bigs at each of the elbow as Jameer Nelson brings the ball up.

oto1

Once Nelson picks a side and enters the ball to the elbow, he immediately cuts off of the man he passed it to.

oto2

Nelson cuts off of the big with the basketball and heads straight to the corner, setting a screen for Hedo Turkoglu.  Turkoglu works off of the screen, heading towards the top of the key.

oto3

The play is designed for Turkoglu getting a basketball from a handoff and using a staggered ball screen (with the man handing the ball off as the front man on the staggered screen).

oto4

The most interesting aspect of the Magic’s post timeout strategy is that there isn’t a set play.  Once Turkoglu gets the basketball he can look to score and if that doesn’t happen the Magic simply run their 4 out 1 in offense.  Here is the play in real time:

Turkoglu kind of fumbles the basketball here so he simply kicks it out and the Magic are in their offense where they enter it to Dwight, Dwight kicks it out, and Nelson knocks down the jumper.

Another variation of this play is Nelson entering it to the elbow and instead of cutting off of him on the outside, he cuts through middle and then wraps around for the handoff (instead of Turkoglu getting the handoff).

Orlando Magic – BLOB sets

The Stats:

0.802 PPP | 22nd best | 39.6% Shooting

The Plays:

Working out of the baseline, the Magic run a set to get Jameer Nelson the ball in the corner, and then run a pick and roll once he gets the basketball just about every time.

ob1

The play starts with Gilbert Arenas cutting through the lane towards the opposite corner once Hedo Turkoglu gets the basketball.

ob2

Once Arenas clears through, Jameer Nelson gets a staggered screen from the two Magic bigs. Nelson uses the screen to head straight to the basketball where he gets the pass.

ob3

Nelson gets the pass in the corner and Dwight Howard comes over to set the screen.  Now, the Magic are simply playing the pick and roll game.  Here is the play in real time:

In this particular set, Nelson reads how the defense is playing his pick and roll and he splits the defense, and attacks the rim.  Here is a few more looks at the play.

Orlando Magic – SLOB sets

The Stats:

0.881 PPP | 17th best | 41.2% Shooting

The Plays:

When entering the ball from the sideline, the Magic don’t really run anything special here. They simply get the ball to Jameer Nelson at the top of the key and then send a screener for him, running the pick and roll. Here is a few looks at the play.

Atlanta Hawks – Post Timeout Sets

The Stats:

0.903 PPP | 9th best | 44.4% Shooting

Clipboard Award Final Standing: 14th

The Plays:

Like the Magic in SLOB situations, the Hawks don’t really have a “go-to” set play that they run.  Instead, they opt to send a few screens to Joe Johnson and let him work off of that:

Here, Johnson comes off of a staggered screen along the baseline as the ball gets brought up.  Johnson curls off of it, is defended, so instead of forcing the ball up, he kicks it out to the corner and Marvin Williams knocks down the jumper.  Here is a few more looks:

Atlanta Hawks – BLOB sets

The Stats:

0.848 PPP | 12th best | 43.9% Shooting

The Plays:

When it comes to BLOB sets, the Hawks run a nice little play that is designed to get one of their shooters (especially Joe Johnson) the basketball in the corner for an open jumper.

On the play, you have the center Al Horford popping out to the corner and then quickly swinging the basketball to the top of the key.  After the pass, Joe Johnson (the man who inbounds the basketball) comes off of a staggered screen to the corner, gets the ball and knocks down the jumper.  Here is another look.

In addition to this play, there is a second option that the Hawks like to work, freeing up Al Horford for the 16 footer.

The play starts the same, with the big popping out to the corner and then kicking it to the top of the key.  However, instead of the inbounder coming off of the staggered screen, Horford is the man who pops off of the screen for the open jumper.

Atlanta Hawks – SLOB sets

The Stats:

0.852 PPP | 23rd best | 40.4% Shooting

The Plays:

Working from the sideline, the Hawks like to run a play where the ball gets inbounded (again by Joe Johnson), and after the inbounds pass, he gets a backscreen set for him by Kirk Hinrich:

After Hinrich sets the screen, he curls around the big with the ball, getting a handoff that turns into a nice pick and roll.  Here is another look:

If the defense starts to overplay this, the Hawks are always looking to hit Joe Johnson on the backscreen.  Here is that live:

Here, there is a little miscommunication by the Rockets defense and Joe Johnson comes open.  Because the Hawks are looking for this, Johnson is able to get the ball and finish the open lay-up.
