Defensive Errors From Asseco Prokom Leads To A Game Clincher From Galatasaray

Galatasaray, the Turkish team that took one of the two final EuroLeague spots in the qualifying round, found themselves leading Asseco Prokom by one point with about 35 seconds left.  Looking to stretch their lead to three points, Galatasaray wanted to milk the clock and get a high ball screen set.  Despite the inability to get the screen set, Galatasaray was able to take advantage of a few defensive errors from Asseco Prokom and get that game clinching basket:

We pick up the set with the ball at the top of the key as it is being dribbled out by Galatasaray’s point guard.  As this is taking place, Luksa Andric attempts to come up and set a high ball screen for the ball handler.  However, Andric’s defender, Adam Hrycaniuk, is pressuring him heavily off of the basketball.

In his attempt to get free of Hrycaniuk’s defense, Andric loses sight of the original goal, which was to get a screen set.  With his timing thrown off, Andric is unable to get a solid screen set.  In fact, his timing is thrown off so much that Andric needs to bascially dive out of the way to avoid a moving screen being called on him.  Despite that, the threat of a ball screen being set gives the ball handler the advantage over his defender, forcing Hrycaniuk to correctly help.

With Hrycaniuk helping, the ball handler is forced to kick the ball out to the wing.  With just 9 seconds left on the shot clock, it is looking like Asseco Prokom is about to get the stop they need.  However, Hrycaniuk gets caught ball watching after providing help and he doesn’t relocate his man, Andric, who is working hard to get back into the action.

Andric gets to the basketball and Hrycaniuk now needs to find his man and try to close out on him.  With Hrycaniuk rushing, he closes out wildly, allowing Andric to show the ball and drive by him.

This is where the second mistake takes place.  Asseco Prokom’s big man Donatas Motiejunas is in pretty good help position (mostly due to Galatasaray’s poor floor spacing), but he doesn’t provide the much needed help.  He turns to the face the dribble penetration, but he doesn’t react to it.

This allows Andric to get all the way to the rim and finish strong, hitting the lay-up, and giving his team the three point lead.  Here is the play in real time:

When the play starts, it looks like Galatasaray is going to shoot themselves in the foot and give Asseco Prokom a chance to win the game.  However, by making two key mistakes Asseco Prokom bailed Galatasaray out and allowed Andric to get the key bucket.  After Asseco Prokom went for the quick two and failed, the game was effectively over.
