My first post on NBAPlaybook appeared on January 3rd, 2010 and as the site approaches it’s second year there are going to be some big changes made. I’ve accepted a position with Grantland in which I’m going to be posting 3/4 times a week covering both the NBA and college basketball. I’ve already done some stuff over there the past couple weeks, and you can check that stuff out over here. While it’s an amazing opportunity, it does mean that I won’t be able to continue running NBAPlaybook, Basketball Prospectus, or The Basketball Jones anymore.
The site isn’t going to die, far from it, and you will learn more about the plan to keep it soon (if you are interested in writing for NBAPlaybook, send your credentials to writing@NBAPlaybook.com). In the meantime, I do want to thank everyone for visiting the site and turning it into what it has become. A special thanks to Henry Abbott, Kevin Arnovitz, Matt Moore, Kurt Helin, Zach Lowe, J.E. Skeets, Kevin Pelton, and everyone else that I am obviously forgetting for all of the great advice and insight they provided me helping me turn NBAPlaybook into something special (seriously, go check out those first few posts, eww).
NBAPlaybook should be continuing with it’s regularly scheduled posts sometime next week.
As you may have heard, I am going to be helping out the Fort Wayne Mad Ants this upcoming D-League season, and that has me moving to Fort Wayne, Indiana. That move is taking place early Monday morning as I hop in my car and make the 10 hour drive to Indiana. Because of that, I am spending the rest of this week prepping for the move and I won’t have any time to get anymore posts up until next Tuesday. My posts at The Basketball Jones and Basketball Prospectus will still be there (coming tomorrow and Friday), just nothing here until next week.
So what should you expect when we get back to daily content? More draft scouting reports, more mythbusters, a look at Rick Adelman and the Minnesota Timberwolves, and a look at some controversial point guards and whether or not they should be point guards. These posts will start coming on Tuesday.
One final note, this is a good opportunity to bring up donations. I have been blown away and humbled by the generosity of the readers who donated, and if you haven’t that is fine too. However, to help me keep posting at a regular season pace (even if there is no regular season, I will be covering EuroLeague as if it was the NBA season), while in Indiana I need to continue to ask for donations. Here is the ChipIn Display once again:
The newest edition of The Beat aired tonight on NBA TV and in this edition the great Lang Whitaker mentioned a few of his favorite NBA blogs. NBA Playbook happened to get a mention (2:30):
Pretty cool to be mentioned with all of the great resources that Lang mentioned in addition to this site. The whole video clip is worth watching.
The NBA season starts in two weeks now, and couldn’t be more excited. However, the new season also means that hosting and other site related fees are due for NBA Playbook. As things stand right now, I don’t get paid to do this. That’s not to say that I would turn down any money offered to me, but if that never happens, so be it. I do this because I love watching and talking about the NBA, and I hope that shows in my work.
With all of that being said, running a website isn’t cheap and it does run up some costs. Add that to the fact that I am going to school full time and not working right now, and it is tough to get the site-related stuff paid for. That is where I hope you guys come in. I am humbling asking for donations to help pay for site related expenses. If you are willing to help, that’s great, and there is a chip in widget on the right hand side where you can help out. If not, that’s cool too, no big deal. I want to make it clear that I am not going hold back any content or anything like that if nobody wants to donate. To prove this isn’t a money grabbing effort (every cent donated will be put back into the website in order to make it the best it can possibly be), I took down all advertising on the site. Also, I won’t be mentioning this anymore (we will get back to regularly scheduled posts tomorrow morning), and the only place you will see it mentioned is over on the sidebar.
Thanks for everything guys, especially for coming over and checking out my posts and contributing some great discussion. I can’t wait for the season to get started so we can start breaking down some actual games!
The title is pretty self-explanatory, but if you are someone who is pretty good with stats, and you want to write about it, I am looking for someone to do a weekly stats column. I already put out some feelers (posted on Twitter), but if you are interested, shoot me an e-mail over at sebastian@nbaplaybook.com
I am still messing around with the posting schedule for this site, and trying to find more daily content I can do (because I don’t want to have just the Possession Breakdowns every day), so don’t hesitate to e-mail me for suggestions. I really am trying to figure out what to do to preview the NBA nightly. Should I do one big breakdown (sort of like the game of the week) for one game a night, or do a small preview for each game?
Also, I plan on doing a playcalling/execution top 5 and not top 5 at the end of every week, so if you got something good, hit me with that kind of stuff too!
