After every day of games here at the Vegas Summer League, “Unsigned Hype” is going to be looking at the best performances from players who don’t have contracts with NBA teams or who were drafted by a team in the past year’s draft. Guys who with great performances in the Summer League, may be able to play themselves into a training camp invite and maybe even a NBA contract. Due to my schedule, we are now going to be looking at both day 2 and day 3 here…

Day 2

Edgar Sosa

Sosa only played 16 minutes on day 2, but he looked really impressive in my opinion. Edgar Sosa only scored six points, but he did a good job managing the team and getting the ball to scorers both in the half court set and on the break. Even more impressive, Sosa’s running seemed to get Greg Monroe going, and Monroe’s best stretch of basketball so far was mostly a result of Edgar Sosa.

Day 3

Shane Edwards

After a really solid day 1 performance, Edwards’ game dropped off a bit on day 2. Day 3 allowed for Edwards to get back on the unsigned hype list. Again, it was Edwards’ efficiency that really impressed me, scoring 15 points on just 7 shots. Edwards also showed an ability to grab rebounds, getting six of them in 27 minutes.

Coby Karl

These are the type of performances Karl can put up when his shot is falling. On Day 1, Karl couldn’t hit his shot, but his ability to everything on the court allowed him to have a productive game. Day 3 saw Karl do all those little things, grabbing seven rebounds and recording four assists. In addition to that, you saw Karl’s shooting stroke. He scored 22 points on 10 shots including 3-5 from the three point line. Karl’s ability to get to the foul line (7-7 from the stripe) is what might get him a camp invite/roster spot this year.

Shane Edwards

When asked what he was hoping to showcase at the Las Vegas Summer League, Shane Edwards was quoted in Fanhouse as saying:

“I’d like to showcase my ability to finish strong around the basket with contact and my athletic ability to get up and down the court.”

Boy did he ever. It helped that he was playing on the run and gun Nuggets team that were unselfishly passing the ball, but Edwards showed an ability to run the floor, fill lanes, and being able to finish with contact. Basically, he did everything he wanted to do out there. Edwards scored an efficient 15 points on 5-6 shooting and was able to get to the line 7 times, where he converted 5 of the attempts. He also rounded out his numbers with 3 assists and 3 steals:

Richard Roby

Richard Roby had the same type of game as Shane Edwards, albeit a little less efficiently. Roby did a good job of filling in wings on the break and knocking down a few outside shots on his way to 16 points on 6-10 shooting:

Coby Karl

Coby Karl didn’t have the best shooting performance of his career yesterday (just 3-8 shooting), but he did have a really solid all around game. Anytime he was with the ball in transition, Karl had his head up looking to hit teammates filling the lane (Karl had assisted on the two dunks you see above). This Nuggets summer league team was one of the most unselfish summer league teams I have seen in a long while, and Karl was the catalyst. Karl was also able to get himself to to the line 10 times (while hitting 9) and added 5 assists and 7 rebounds to his 16 points:

Jeremy Lin

Many people had Lin, out of Harvard, going in the second round of last month’s NBA Draft, but instead he went undrafted and is looking to get himself a camp invite. Lin worked off the ball mostly with Rodrigue Beaubois handling the point guard duties. Lin looked comfortable and was able to get himself into the lane on more than one occasion. That’s impressive because Lin isn’t the fastest guy around but he is crafty enough to find the lane (using crossovers and a decent hesitation dribble). Jeremy Lin finished with 12 points and just 2 assists (though if his team hit a few more shots this number could have been higher), but he looked comfortable out there:

Zabian Dowdell

I was more focused on watching Earl Clark and Patrick Patterson to get a good look at Dowdell, but he did impress. Here is what Jon L from Ridiculous Upside thought:

Dowdell showed a bit of the strict scorer’s mentality that he’s been working to shed, but overall he did a good job running the Suns offense, finishing with 16 points, four assists and three rebounds. He was able to get into the lane and to the rim fairly easily, and in all likelihood would’ve finished with a lot more assists if the other starters didn’t miss 30 shots combined. Dowdell has a pretty good shot at a training camp invitation somewhere.

Honorable Mention

D.J. Strawberry

Strawberry did a good job of using his athletic ability to get him up and down the court. However, while his 14 points on 8 shots and all around activity were pretty impressive, his 5 turnovers, 0 assists, and 1 rebound was not. The lack of production elsewhere and all the turnovers kept him off the list.
